Preventive Copier & Printer Maintenance

Preventative maintenance is an important aspect of making sure your inkjet, dot matrix, thermal, or laser printer is operating at its greatest potential. Preventative maintenance keeps the printer running at its greatest potential and at optimal quality. Performing a maintenance check every month will extend the life of the printer and give the user the satisfaction that the printer will work on demand when it is called upon.

Most businesses choose to use one of our service contract options as proper printer maintenance can be quite overwhelming. Our service technicians will explain the basics of proper usage and maintenance to the end user to perform checks on the printer when a problem occurs. Without appropriate care, problems such as paper jams, poor imaging, and leaking toner can occur which can completely destroy a machine. Dusty work environments are the main cause for printer problems but with proper care the life of the printer can be prolonged to exceed expectations.

Preventative maintenance for laser printers is even more important than other types of printers. A laser printer typically prints more pages per minute and have more moving parts. The maintenance process involves much more detail as the ozone filters, static eliminator teeth, and fuser unit all need to be properly inspected.

Here are some tips to keep your printer running smoothly:

  • Use isopropyl or ethyl alcohol over solvent or ammonia based cleaners.
  • Use water dampened or alcohol dampened lint free cloths.
  • Always inspect paper pickup rollers for dust as they need to be cleaned periodically.
  • Rollers that appear glazed or become shiny need to be replaced.
  • Inspect separation pads for dust build up. Separation pads should be cleaned with alcohol or water dampened lint cloth the same way the pickup rollers are cleaned.
  • Separation pads should be replaced at the same time when rollers are replaced.
  • If transfer rollers are really dirty they should be cleaned. It is important to not touch the rollers with bare fingers. A dry lint free cloth must be used, if there are toner spills on the transfer roller then the transfer roller will need to be replaced.
  • Inspect mirrors for dust and other build up. Compressed air or a lint free cloth work well for cleaning.
  • Inspect fuser assembly rollers for any blemishes or marks; replace the fuser assembly if you notice anything out of the ordinary.
